athens to skopelos
View over Stafylos Beach

Skopelos is one of my favourite islands in Greece. Part of the Northern Sporades island group, it lies in the western Aegean Sea. Although not as well known as some of its rowdier and more crowded counterparts, you will quickly see why the crew of Mamma Mia chose this location to shoot parts of their film.

Athens to Skopelos

If you’re coming from Athens to Skopelos or Thessaloniki, it’s feasible to go here for a weekend. Fly into Skiathos, and then take the ferry over to Skopelos, which takes slightly over an hour. However, if you’re coming from outside Greece, I would suggest that you give yourself several days to visit this magical place.

There is no airport on Skopelos, so you’ll either have to fly into neighbouring Skiathos and take the ferry to Skopelos, or drive to Volos and take a direct ferry to the island. In the high season, there are a couple of ferries per day, but it’s best to check the schedule on Hellenic Seaways directly. One of the most authentic Greek islands I’ve been to, a part of its charm lies in the fact that it’s less accessible to reach than more touristic places.

If you’re looking for loud parties and rows upon rows of sunbeds, then Skopelos is not for you. But if you’re looking for sun-kissed beaches with turquoise water, greenery and sunshine, read on.

Best Places to Visit:

Skopelos Town is where most of the island’s 5000 or so inhabitants live. With its winding cobblestone streets, quaint restaurants and cafés on the harbourfront, you will be captivated. Enjoy magnificent views from the top of the Church of the Virgin Mary, or Panagitsa Tower.

Rent a car, scooter or quad and drive around the island to discover some of its most beautiful beaches. Famous for its crystal clear waters and lush greenery, check out my favourites: Limnonari, Kastani and Perivolou.

Visit some of the lovely old Greek monasteries on the island, such as the Monastery of Agia Varvara. Be prepared to be mesmerised by its stunning views and frescoes dating back to the 15th century.

The chapel at Agios Ioannis

Make sure to also visit the famous Mamma Mia chapel in Agios Ioannis. The chapel can be reached by 110 stone steps, and stands impressively atop a massive rock. It is well worth the climb, as it offers wonderful views over Skopelos and neighbouring Alonissos.

Have a drink in:

With some of the best views over Skopelos Town and its harbour, Vrachos Cocktail Bar is not to be missed – the cocktails are pretty amazing too.

If you’re looking for a relaxed bar/cantina, check out the Perivoliou Beach Bar. Don’t expect too much in terms of choice, but be prepared to be spoilt with magnificent views over the north coast of Skopelos, whilst sitting under the pine trees.

Eat in:

My only regret about going to Muses Restaurant was that I hadn’t gone there earlier! Hands down the best food I have eaten in Skopelos and all for a very reasonable price.

Tania’s tip: don’t leave without trying their speciality dish, kleftiko.

Another wonderful restaurant which we came across is the Korali Restaurant in the quiet bay of Agnondas. This delightful seafood taverna lies on the waterfront and is romantic, charming and elegant. With a large variety of starters and fresh seafood on offer, my personal favourite was the grilled octopus – simply scrumptious!

Sleep in:

Mando Beachfront

There is only one place on Skopelos which I will keep going back to when I go there and that is Mando Beachfront. With stunning sea views from every room, apartment or villa, Mando’s will be your home away from home. Jason and his lovely mother are the hosts of this impeccably-kept family business and make sure that your every need is accounted for. Can it get any better? Actually, yes. Its one of the rare hotels in Skopelos which has its own private beach!
