Is Zagreb worth visiting?
King Tomislav Square

Zagreb is a relatively undiscovered gem in the Balkans. Larger than Ljubljana and smaller than Belgrade, it is a wonderful mix of Austro-Hungarian and Balkan beauty. That is why it is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway. The locals of Zagreb are known as purgeri and although a bit reserved, they will surprise you with their impeccable dress sense. You might think that you are walking down the streets of Milan or Paris, but make no mistake – these proud people are renowned for their style. If you don’t believe me, sit down in one of the numerous cafes in Tkalčićeva Street, and watch the purgeri go by.

Best Places to Visit:

For a city with less than a million inhabitants, Zagreb has a surprising number of high-quality museums and cultural venues. If you are there in the spring or summer, visit the Botanical Garden. It was founded in 1891 and is a part of the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb. Even though it is not so large, it is a delightful place to spend a quiet hour in the middle of the city.

Walk past the main square, Trg Bana Jelačića, down Ilica and up to the Kaptol, or Upper Town. One of the oldest parts of the city, it is also the seat of the Roman Catholic archbishop of Zagreb. Spend an hour or two walking around the cobblestone streets and admiring the impressive St. Mark’s Church. The best view of Zagreb is also from up here. Make sure to stop by the Museum of Broken Relationships while you’re up there – the first of its kind in the world.

Where to have a drink in Zagreb:

Walking down from Kaptol to Tkalčićeva Street

The street I mentioned above, Tkalčićeva, is where you want to head for the hippest cafes and bars in Zagreb. There is something for everyone here, so it’s hard to recommend a specific place. In any case, you won’t be disappointed!

Eat in Zagreb:

Restoran Boban is undoubtedly one of my favourite restaurants in Zagreb. It’s a Mediterranean restaurant in the heart of the city, with a special focus on Italian cuisine. All of their pasta, bread and desserts are homemade. Make sure that you call in advance to reserve to avoid disappointment.

Tania’s tip: try the cannelloni with spinach and ricotta stuffing – it’s to die for!

With both Michelin Bib Gourmand and Gault & Millau recommendations, restaurant Agava is the essence of fine Mediterranean dining. With a beautiful view on Tkalčićeva Street, this restaurant offers a tasting menu with wine pairing as well. Their head chef, Belizar Miloš, was voted one of Croatia’s best chefs. Prepare to be blown away by the exquisite recipes.

Where to stay in Zagreb for 1 night

Built between 1921 and 1923, the Amadria Park Hotel Capital is one of the most luxurious hotels in the city. Housed in the former Croatian branch of an Austrian bank, it was designed by famous Viennese architects Ernst Gotthilf and Alexander Neumann. I guarantee that you will get a good night’s sleep here!

For those of you on a more limited budget, try Hotel Jägerhorn. It’s a stone’s throw away from Trg Bana Jelačića and is close to numerous bars, museums and restaurants. Each of the 18 rooms are unique and beautifully designed. The hotel describes itself as having “an eclectic marriage of chic design and old world comfort”. Do you need more convincing?
